The Complete Guide To Creating Your Own Capsule Wardrobe

The Complete Guide To Creating Your Own Capsule Wardrobe

Author: Kassie Shanafelt

If you’re on the journey towards a more sustainable future, you might have seen the term “Capsule Wardrobe” floating around your Google searches. It’s not a wardrobe you stow away underground for twenty years and then open up to see how you’ve changed. It’s actually a great way to minimize your spending and impact on the environment. Here’s a quick breakdown of everything you need to know about Capsule Wardrobe:

What exactly IS a Capsule Wardrobe?
Simply defined, a Capsule Wardrobe is a mini version of your closet including around thirty-seven of your all-time-favorite pieces. The idea is that each season, you pick out a set number of pieces that you can mix and match rather than buying a new outfit for every occasion.

What NOT to include in your Capsule Wardrobe:
When building your own Capsule Wardrobe, it’s important to not drive yourself to the edge of crazy. Your Capsule Wardrobe does not include things like underwear, pajamas, work out clothes, accessories, or that sentimental piece you love but don’t always wear. You can have these items physically in your closet, but don’t count them in your Capsule Wardrobe tally.

What to include in your Capsule Wardrobe:
Your Capsule Wardrobe should include roughly thirty-seven of your absolute best
pieces. An example wardrobe could include:

● 8 tops
● 8 bottoms
● 4 dress
● 7 outerwear pieces
● 10 pairs of shoes

However, this can all be tailored to your personal style. If you’re someone who only wears dresses, then maybe cut back on bottoms to make room for more dresses. The options are all up to you. Just make sure to pick pieces that will give you a range of outfit options.

For example, our Friday Billow Blouse can be styled at least 6 different ways. If you can’t get that kind of mileage from a top, it’s probably best not to include it.

Some examples for all of the inspo:
@noelleandfox’s Instagram is a great place to grab some inspiration for your own
Capsule Wardrobe. We’re not sure if she abides by the exact thirty-seven piece rule, but the sentiment is there. Her wardrobe has a distinct color palette and should give you a great idea of how to mix and match different pieces.

Our absolute favorite capsule wardrobe helper is the app Cladwell. There you can cultivate, shop and plan your wardrobe and also schedule outfits and get styling tips. You'll even find some OhSevenDays garments in there.

Again, the best tip is really to look for staple pieces. Luckily, you don’t have to look too far. Each of the pieces in our collection are designed to be multi-functional and styled several different ways.

We hope these tidbits help on your pathway to a more minimal closet! We’d love to see how you’re styling your Capsule Wardrobe this season. Feel free to share your looks with us on our Instagram, @ohsevendays.
