This week we're joined by the utterly gorgeous and equally delightful ethical YouTuber Chloe Kian. Chloe shot a couple of our fav AW19 pieces, The Monday Marwa and The Monday Marie and discussed with us everything from her childhood in Switzerland her sustainability efforts and even some podcast tips!
Where did you grow up and what was your childhood like?
I grew up in Switzerland and had a very active life since I was a kid. My parents were into skiing, hiking and all sorts of outdoor activities so we did lots of these. I was also lucky to start traveling very early and often with my family. Both my mother and grandmother had a garden where they grew their own fruit and veggies. I was brought up with a strong connection to nature, a love for simple life joys.
What's your dream for your career?
I always knew I wouldn’t want a 9-5 job and I worked really hard for it not to happen. Now I could say I have my "dream job", I am my own boss, I can work from anywhere, create content and videos about topics I am passionate about. But don’t be fooled, it’s not all just fun all the time. Being a freelancer and showing your life to the public eye has some drawbacks too. And although it still works like any other job, with advantages and disadvantages, I am extremely grateful to be able to live from something I love doing.
Why is sustainability important to you and how are you trying to be sustainable in your day to day like?
Sustainability is important to me because I care about our future and the future of our kids. There are many areas of my life in which I do my best to reduce my impact, such as eating plant-based, shopping second hand, adopting zero waste alternatives, but I am far from perfect. I still buy imported foods packed in plastic and hop on a plane sometimes. Whatever it is we’d like to improve in our lives, I think we should all focus on all the good things we already do instead of blaming ourselves (and others) what we (they) aren’t doing yet.
How do you unwind after a rough day?
I love taking a warm bath or shower and preparing a nice dinner. Cooking is one of my favorite activities to unwind because it forces me to be present. Otherwise, I love yoga or a good book/movie too.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Right now I hope that in 5 years I will be able to own a house or apartment, maybe start a family, and own a company and business which doesn’t require so much from me. But so much can happen in such a long period of time and I change my mind all the time so I prefer focusing on the present.
Who has been the biggest influencer in your life and why?
I’ve had many different meaningful connections with people who have influenced me in a way or another. All of them have had an impact on me for a specific area of my life.
If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?
Everything is temporary and everything will be ok.
What do you feel the best wearing?
High waisted jeans and a white T-shirt or a dress in the Summer.
Do you have any favorite podcasts?
Yes! I listen to so many podcasts and about to start my own. It really depends on my mood but my favorites at the moment are Tasting Tastebuds by Venetia Falconer, The Rise Podcast by Rachel Ollis and The Lavendaire Podcast by Aileen Xu.
